Ιt is foreseen (by the Ministry of Environment and Energy) that the ban on trawling will be incorporated into the Special Environmental Studies (SES) and the presidential decrees for the national marine parks and the other Marine Protected Areas. Consequently, the implementation of this commitment is linked to the progress of implementing Commitment 02 and Commitment 06. At the present stage, the ban is included in the approved Special Environmental Study (SES 4a) concerning the National Marine Park of Alonissos Northern Sporades (where bottom trawling is already prohibited based on the archaeological legislation). The ban is also included in the SES of the two new national marine parks in the Ionian and Aegean Seas, for which the public consultation has been completed (on 22.9.2025). The ban will be formally institutionalized with the issuance of the relevant presidential decrees.
In parallel, Greece has not drafted and has not published, as stipulated by the Action Plan of the European Commission on‘protecting and restoring the marine ecosystems for sustainable and resilient fisheries’ a ‘roadmap’ setting out the measures required for the implementation of phasing-out of mobile bottom fishing within marine protected areas.
