We are publishing today We SeaYou’s second progress report on Greece’s commitments and institutional obligations regarding marine protected areas.
The assessment records Greece’s progress in implementing its commitments at the 9th International Conference on Oceans (April 2024) and the implementation of key institutional obligations for marine protected areas (MPAs) in accordance with EU legislation.
Compared to the first report (April 2025), there has been little progress on the commitments as a whole, with the exception of those related to the creation of the two new national marine parks in the Ionian and South Aegean and the monitoring and early warning system for passing vessels to avoid collisions with cetaceans. Greece needs to do much more to ensure the protection of Greek marine protected areas.
The WeSeaYou Observatory is the first digital platform for monitoring commitments to protect the marine environment in Greece.
It is an initiative of WWF Greece, Greenpeace, and Vouliwatch, with the support of the following environmental organizations: Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, Hellenic Ornithological Society, Thalassa Foundation/AENAOS THALASSA, Blue Marine Foundation, Cyclades Preservation Fund, iSea, MEDASSET.
