HSPN participates in NaTour4CChange

The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature participates in the NaTour4CChange project, as part of Mission 4 – “Enhancing Sustainable Tourism” of the European Interreg Euro-MED Program. The aim of the project is to strengthen the governance of sustainable tourism in areas of high environmental value by reconnecting tourism and nature to address climate change with an ecosystem-based approach. The program adopts practices that have been successfully implemented in the Mediterranean to apply nature-based solutions. Specifically, the study areas include:

  • Dugi Otok in Zadar County, Croatia
  • Hutovo Blato National Park in Neretva Canton, Bosnia -Herzegovina
  • Cabo de Gata in Andalusia, Spain
  • The Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area and the Tavolara Island Marine Protected Area (Autonomous Region of Sardinia) in Italy
  • The Zakros Mountains and Koufonisi Island in Crete, Greece
  • Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in the Nice and Côte d’Azur Metropolis, France

The project has multiple objectives, including improving the sustainability and resilience of Mediterranean coastal destinations, decentralizing tourism governance, and adopting an ecosystem approach. 

This project focuses on the utilization of nature and the services it has to offer, while the expected results of the project include:

  • 5 Regional Strategies for addressing and adapting to climate change in the coastal tourism sector
  • 6 Destination Climate Action Plans for the coastal tourism sector
  • Capitalization Report describing the overall approach to designing climate change resilience in the tourism sector
  • 6 Reports on testing nature-based solutions in pilot destinations.
