Removing discarded fishing gear and marine plastic pollution from the Argosaronic

Discarded fishing gear and marine plastic pollution remain among the most persistent threats to Mediterranean coastal ecosystems, contributing to ghost fishing, habitat degradation and long-term microplastic accumulation.

In response, Argosaronic Environment Foundation collaborates with Enaleia to establish structured collection systems for end-of-life fishing gear, working closely with local authorities and fishing communities to ensure proper disposal and integration into certified recycling supply chains.

By preventing marine litter at its source, these interventions strengthen circular economy practices within fisheries and contribute to the long-term protection of marine ecosystems across the Argosaronic region.

As of 2026, Argosaronic Environment Foundation has established disposal points in Spetses, Hydra, Koilada, Nea Kios, and Porto Cheli, and have collected more than 12 tons of fishing gear and marine plastic in total.
