The two new marine parks in the Southern Cyclades and the Ionian are now open for public consultation: This is a very important development, and further action is pending for the remaining protected areas.
News / Announcements
Following Greece’s commitments announced at the International Conference Our Ocean, the Special Environmental Studies for the two new National Marine Parks in the Southern Cyclades and the Ionian (National Marine Park of the Ionian and National Marine Park of the Southern Aegean 1 – Southern Cyclades) have been completed and have been put to public consultation from July 21, 2025 until September 22.
It is important for interested citizens and stakeholders to participate in the public consultation and submit their comments and proposals, so that these can be taken into account by the competent authorities for the final formation of the parks.
The two new national marine parks aim at the effective protection of our seas and the preservation of biodiversity and represent a very important initiative of the government. In order to effectively achieve the 30×30 target, the establishment of the two new marine parks must include appropriate protection measures (for example, prohibition and regulation of harmful activities) based on the ecological requirements of each area, as well as a management plan, a surveillance and monitoring plan, and sufficient resources (such as staff and equipment) for management actions, surveillance, and inspections.
